Ban Gioc Waterfall, Vietnam: Majestic Falls on the Border

by The Universal Staff

Tucked away in northern Vietnam’s Cao Bang province, near the Chinese border, lies Ban Gioc Waterfall, one of the most spectacular and least visited natural wonders in Southeast Asia. Known locally as Thác Bản Giốc, these majestic falls cascade over limestone cliffs into the emerald waters of the Quây Sơn River, creating a breathtaking, multi-tiered curtain of water.

Despite its incredible beauty, Ban Gioc remains a hidden gem, often overlooked by tourists in favour of more popular destinations like Halong Bay or Sapa. This makes it an ideal spot for travellers seeking untouched landscapes, cultural immersion, and quiet moments surrounded by nature.

Why Visit Ban Gioc Waterfall?

Ban Gioc is one of the largest and most impressive waterfalls in Asia. It straddles the international border between Vietnam and China, with the falls themselves naturally dividing the two countries.

Unlike many famous waterfalls that attract dense crowds, Ban Gioc offers a peaceful, uncrowded experience, where you can enjoy the sheer power and beauty of the falls without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.

Top Things to Do at Ban Gioc Waterfall

1. View the Falls from Different Angles

There are multiple viewpoints around Ban Gioc where you can appreciate its grandeur:

  • From the riverbank, where you can feel the cool mist and hear the thunderous roar.
  • From the wooden walkways that offer panoramic views of the multi-tiered cascade.
  • From bamboo rafts that take you right up to the base of the falls for an exhilarating, close-up perspective.

2. Take a Bamboo Raft Ride

One of the best ways to experience Ban Gioc is by hopping on a bamboo raft. The ride takes you along the calm waters near the foot of the falls, allowing you to marvel at their power from below. You’ll even float close to the Chinese side, offering a unique international view.

3. Visit Nguom Ngao Cave

Just a few kilometres from Ban Gioc is Nguom Ngao Cave, an incredible limestone cavern that stretches over two kilometres underground. Inside, you’ll find impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and cool chambers that feel like a secret world beneath the mountains.

The cave is well-lit and easy to navigate, making it a perfect addition to your Ban Gioc adventure.

4. Explore Local Villages and Rice Fields

The area surrounding Ban Gioc is home to ethnic Tay and Nung minority communities. Visiting local villages offers an authentic glimpse into rural life in northern Vietnam.

Cycling or walking through the peaceful rice fields, small wooden houses, and quiet country roads provides a refreshing break from Vietnam’s busier cities.

5. Truc Lam Phat Tich Pagoda

This newly built Buddhist temple sits on a hill overlooking Ban Gioc Waterfall. The short climb rewards you with panoramic views of the falls and the surrounding karst mountains. The temple grounds are peaceful, and it’s a great place to reflect and take in the serene beauty of the region.

Where to Stay

Accommodations near Ban Gioc are limited but charming:

  • Local Guesthouses and Homestays: Offer basic comfort, home-cooked meals, and warm hospitality.
  • Small Hotels: Can be found in nearby Cao Bang city, about 85 kilometres away, where you’ll have more options.

Staying in a homestay near the falls provides a unique chance to experience local culture and the simple beauty of the countryside.

Getting to Ban Gioc Waterfall

  • From Hanoi: It’s about a 7 to 8-hour drive or bus ride to Cao Bang city, followed by another 2–3 hours to Ban Gioc.
  • From Cao Bang: Private car, motorbike, or local minivan options are available.

The journey is long but incredibly scenic, passing through mountain passes, deep valleys, and quiet towns.

Best Time to Visit

  • May to September: Rainy season, when the falls are at their most powerful and the surrounding rice fields are lush and green.
  • October to April: Dry season, with gentler waterfalls but clearer skies and cooler temperatures.

Visiting early in the morning ensures you’ll have the falls almost to yourself.
