Craig Gordon Returns to Scotland Squad for Nations League Matches

Craig Gordon makes a comeback to the Scotland squad for the Nations League after missing out on Euro 2024. Learn more about his determination and Steve Clarke’s thoughts.

Craig Gordon Returns to Scotland Squad After Euro 2024 Omission

Craig Gordon is back in the Scotland squad after missing out on the European Championship this summer. The 41-year-old Hearts goalkeeper has been recalled by head coach Steve Clarke for the upcoming Nations League matches against Croatia and Portugal in October. Gordon’s return highlights his determination to continue his international career, despite recent setbacks.

Gordon, who suffered a serious double leg break in 2022, was left out of the Euro 2024 squad, sparking questions about whether his international career had come to an end. However, the veteran goalkeeper reclaimed his starting position at Hearts from Zander Clark, and with that, his place in the national team.

Clarke Confident in Gordon’s Hunger to Compete

Steve Clarke expressed his confidence in Gordon’s desire to keep playing at the highest level. During a press conference, Clarke said, “Craig told me that it was not a farewell, and he would see me in the future.” That promise has now been fulfilled, as Gordon is once again part of the squad.

Clarke praised Gordon’s resilience, especially after overcoming both age and a significant injury. “He’s always shown that he’s up for the fight. He wants to play every week and as many times as he can for his country,” Clarke added.

This drive and commitment to the game have been the hallmarks of Gordon’s career. Clarke acknowledged that the goalkeeper’s ability to endure and keep performing at the top level is what makes him such a valuable asset to the team.

Veteran Keeper Back in Contention

Gordon made headlines earlier this year when he became Scotland’s oldest-ever international player at 41, earning his 75th cap in a match against Finland. His international comeback is not only a testament to his perseverance but also a boost for the Scotland squad as they face crucial Nations League matches.

Norwich City’s Angus Gunn and Dundee’s Jon McCracken join Gordon in the goalkeeping line-up. McCracken, who earned his first call-up last month, retains his spot in the squad, giving Clarke multiple options in goal.

Other Key Changes in the Squad

While Gordon’s return is a highlight, there are several other notable changes in the Scotland squad. West Ham midfielder Andy Irving, Aberdeen defender Nicky Devlin, and Preston North End’s Liam Lindsay have all been called up for the first time. These fresh faces bring a mix of youth and experience to the national team.

Unfortunately, influential vice-captain John McGinn will miss the upcoming matches due to a hamstring injury, leaving a gap in midfield. However, Clarke remains optimistic that the squad, bolstered by both new talent and returning veterans like Gordon, is prepared to handle the challenge.

What This Means for Scotland

Gordon’s return is a sign of his dedication and passion for representing Scotland. His experience will be invaluable in the upcoming Nations League matches, where Scotland faces strong opponents in Croatia and Portugal. Clarke’s belief in Gordon’s abilities, despite the goalkeeper’s age and injury history, reflects the importance of leadership and resilience in the squad.

With the Nations League double-header approaching, Scotland fans will be eager to see if Gordon’s return can help stabilize the team as they push for positive results in this crucial tournament. Whether in goal or in the locker room, Gordon’s presence will be a significant boost for Scotland.
