Tucked away in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines lies Siquijor Island, a destination that often flies under the radar of international tourists. Known to locals as the “Island of Fire” due to its glowing sunsets and historical association with mystical traditions, Siquijor is a fascinating blend of natural beauty, laid-back island life, and captivating folklore.

Unlike the crowded beaches of Cebu or the buzzing nightlife of Boracay, Siquijor offers peaceful white-sand beaches, enchanting waterfalls, and a reputation for mysticism that continues to intrigue visitors.

Siquijor’s Mysterious Reputation

For centuries, Siquijor has been known throughout the Philippines as an island of healers, witches, and supernatural legends. Even today, many Filipinos speak of Siquijor with a mix of curiosity and caution.

The island is famous for traditional healers, known as “mananambal,” who use herbal remedies, rituals, and ancient practices to heal both physical and spiritual ailments. Visitors can meet these healers during the annual Healing Festival or through local introductions.

Whether you believe in the island’s mystical stories or not, Siquijor’s reputation adds an unforgettable layer of cultural intrigue to your journey.

Things to Do in Siquijor

While the folklore is captivating, the natural beauty is what keeps travellers enchanted.

1. Cambugahay Falls

One of the island’s most famous attractions, Cambugahay Falls features a series of cascading turquoise pools surrounded by lush jungle. The waterfalls are not just for viewing—you can swing from a rope and plunge into the refreshing waters or relax in the natural pools.

2. Salagdoong Beach

This small beach is known for its clear waters and adventurous cliff-jumping spots. With two diving platforms built into the rock, it’s a favourite for thrill-seekers and a perfect place to swim and snorkel.

3. Capilay Spring Park

Located in the heart of San Juan town, this natural spring-fed pool is a great spot to cool off and mingle with locals. Entry is free, and it’s a peaceful place to relax under the shade of towering trees.

4. Lazi Church and Convent

Built in the 19th century, Lazi Church (San Isidro Labrador Parish) and its adjoining convent are among the oldest and most historically significant structures on the island. The church’s coral stone walls and wooden interiors offer a glimpse into the island’s colonial past.

5. Visit Traditional Healers

For those interested in Siquijor’s mystical side, visiting a traditional healer is a unique cultural experience. Many of these healers prepare herbal potions, amulets, and perform age-old rituals passed down through generations.

6. Island-Hopping and Snorkelling

Take a boat tour around the island or to nearby Apo Island, known for its sea turtles and vibrant coral reefs. The waters around Siquijor are calm, clear, and rich with marine life.

Where to Stay

Siquijor offers a range of accommodations from beachfront resorts to budget guesthouses.

  • San Juan: The most popular area for travellers, offering beach resorts, restaurants, and dive shops.
  • Larena and Siquijor Town: Quieter and closer to the ferry terminals, with more local markets and shops.

Most stays offer ocean views, hammocks, and easy beach access—perfect for slowing down and enjoying the island’s relaxed vibe.

Getting to Siquijor

  • From Dumaguete City: The easiest route is to take a ferry from Dumaguete on Negros Island, which takes about 1 to 1.5 hours.
  • From Cebu or Bohol: Ferries from Tagbilaran (Bohol) and Cebu City also connect to Siquijor, though schedules may vary.

The journey itself is part of the adventure and rewards you with access to one of the Philippines’ best-kept secrets.

Best Time to Visit

  • Dry Season (November to May): Perfect for beach activities, snorkelling, and waterfall hopping.
  • Wet Season (June to October): Fewer tourists, lush landscapes, but occasional heavy rains.

Siquijor Island is a captivating blend of mystery, nature, and tranquillity. Whether you come for the pristine beaches, the healing traditions, or simply to enjoy the slower pace of life, you’ll find that Siquijor leaves a unique imprint on every traveller.

It’s a place where folklore meets crystal-clear waters, where you can dive into waterfalls by day and hear stories of ancient rituals by night. In a country famous for its islands, Siquijor quietly stands out as one of the Philippines’ most fascinating and peaceful hidden gems.
