Ukraine has launched an investigation into a disturbing incident on the eastern front where Russian troops are accused of executing 16 Ukrainian soldiers who had surrendered. The allegations have surfaced after video footage, reportedly taken by a drone, showed what appears to be the summary execution of the soldiers.
Largest Reported Execution of Ukrainian PoWs
Ukraine’s prosecutor general, Andriy Kostin, made the announcement on social media platform X, describing the alleged execution as the largest reported case of its kind on the frontline. Kostin emphasized that this incident is part of a broader pattern, stating, “This is a deliberate policy of the Russian military and political leadership.”
The video, shared widely on social media, shows grainy drone footage of more than ten individuals leaving a trench. They appear to surrender before being fired upon and falling to the ground. Though the footage is difficult to confirm independently, Kostin said it occurred on the Pokrovsk front, an area that has seen heavy Russian assaults recently.
Moscow has not yet responded to these accusations. The Kremlin has consistently denied any involvement in war crimes in Ukraine, including the killing and torture of prisoners of war (PoWs).
Prosecutors Investigating War Crimes
Ukraine’s prosecutor general’s office shared on Telegram that they are actively investigating the video to determine its authenticity and to hold those responsible accountable. This investigation comes amid a broader inquiry into previous allegations of Russian forces killing Ukrainian PoWs. In September, Ukrainian prosecutors revealed they were looking into the deaths of at least 73 PoWs.
Ukraine has documented more than 130,000 war crimes allegedly committed by Russian forces since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. These include not only the killing of prisoners but also torture, abduction, and attacks on civilians.

This latest incident adds to a growing list of accusations that Kyiv has leveled against Moscow since the war began. Kostin, along with international bodies, has pointed to a disturbing trend where surrendering Ukrainian troops are executed, despite the laws of war requiring humane treatment of prisoners.
“This is yet another indication that the killing and torture of prisoners of war are not isolated incidents,” Kostin said. He also emphasized that these actions violate international law and humanitarian norms.
